Spring is in the Air

With baseball being played for almost a month, it makes me remember that it is actually spring. College courses and homework make me feel that the year is not almost over with a paper due in all of my classes and finals around the corner, but right after that, it will officially be the first day of spring. Now you may be asking yourself, is March 20^th not the first day of spring every year?

The one key marker point to know when it is spring, at least to me, is when Rita’s Water Ice has their free water ice day every year. (For all of you mid-westerners, Rita’s is an East coast thing) Being at school at MSU makes me not be able to partake in such a joyous occasion, so I really have no true indication of when spring starts in Michigan. I can thoroughly recall it being a high temperature in the 40s and lows in the upper 20s. Weather is typically a big indicator of the season, but to me, it is defined by marker events.

As Rita’s free water ice day reminds me of spring, you may think, what other reminders are there for the other three seasons? For summer, I would have to say that Memorial Day, May 31^st this year, is the biggest indicator as that is when most pools, including mine open for the season. Then for fall, it would be when the drudgery of the school grind hits again in early September. Everyone can recall the end of their summer and then that next Monday having to sit in a stinking hot classroom with no air conditioning wondering why they choose to have school when the weather is so nice. Those are the days of nostalgia. Finally, there is winter. I feel that almost everyone knows when that happens, but for those of you that do not know when the winter starts, it is the first frost of the year. Those mornings where you have an 8 a.m. class and you walk over frozen grass, you know it is not fall anymore.

The seasons change and so does everyone’s attitude. There is not a single person who does not seem happier when they go to their first baseball game of the season or pack up their first snowball of the winter, you remember those moments. As spring has now officially been going on for thirty-seven days or, in my case, starts in nine days when my finals are over, I ask you to just enjoy those little markers on your calendar. What are your favorite markers throughout the year?

Currently, I am working on an article for my journalism class. I chose the topic of how MIPs (or Minor in Possession for those of you not too familiar with Michigan syntax) impact the professional careers of people who have received them. Up to this point, I have been gathering sources and have begun initial contact with them. I plan to talk to someone at the East Lansing Police Department and/or maybe the MSU Police Department. In addition, I have been in communication with a representative at the East Lansing City Hall in hopes of finding a good person to interview regarding my story. Though I already seem to have my sources pinned down pretty well so far, the hardest part will be getting first-hand experiences of how MIPs have impacted someone’s life. Just by talking to people I know, I have been locating people who have received MIPs, but no one who has directly been impacted by them later in their lives. This hurdle may become more difficult to overcome, but I will soon find out. Possibly one of my sources at the ELPD or City Hall will be able to help me in locating that person.

NLCS + ALCS Previews

Let me start with the American League Championship Series aka ALCS. The matchup between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim looks to be quite even. LAA is playing with a passion to win one for Nick Adenhart, their fallen teammate. On the other hand, the Yankees are playing for paychecks and their reputation as champions. This matchup will be the better of the 2 series. I want to see this series go to 7 games, but I do not think it will. The Yankees now have the front-line pitcher (Sabathia) on top of their elite hitting (Texeira, A-rod, Jeter, etc). The Angels have incredible depth at the starting pitching spot (Lackey, Weaver, Kazmir, Saunders, Santana) and a solid hitting unit with Figgins, Abreu, Hunter, Guererro, etc. The pitching matchup between the two is interesting as the Yankees have the better front-line starters and that, in addition to having Mariano Rivera at the tail end of their bullpen, will vault the Yankees into their first World Series since 2003. Yankees in 6.

Now, on to the National League Championship Series aka NLCS. This rematch from last year’s NLCS between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers will prove to be more exciting than last year. Basically the entire Phillies team is back from last year except Brad Lidge’s dominance, but they added another power bat in Raul Ibañez and a power arm in Cliff Lee. Then go to the Dodgers; they really did little to improve their pitching staff from last year as they only added former-Phillie, Vicente Padilla. (Will the Padilla Floatilla and Wolf Pack be back in Philly?) But the aspect in which they Dodgers drastically improved was with their bench. They added Mark DeRosa (versatility), Jim Thome (power), and Orlando Hudson (a real 2b). I want to see more drama in this series other than headlines reading ‘WELCOME TO MANNYWOOD’. Drama is where baseball is at its finest. Pitch inside… Hit players… Retaliate… Walk-off home runs… High scoring games… OCTOBER BASEBALL!!!! Who will win this series? The Phillies in 7. With a lineup that is extremely difficult to pitch around and a core who knows how to win, I see the Phillies going back to the World Series for the second consecutive year to face the Yankees.

If I’m right, my preseason prediction of Phillies v Yankees will come true. *fingers crossed*

Thoughts? Opinions? Shout out to a one, Andy H (x2)…. another one is due. I know!

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEAS FOR ME??? I’m out of them…

Whether you have borrowed a tissue from them, slept with them, or just met them 5 minutes ago. Say ‘thank you’, it will brighten up their day/night/morning (whatever time-zone you are in).

Here are some college football predictions as per a one, Mr. Andrew Heffler…. I edited them a little bit, but not the content. Lemme know what y’all think. They’re a little summarized compared to last week. Next week’s will be more detailed, I promise!!!

1) Florida v #4 LSU: Regardless of whether Tim Tebow plays, Florida wins this game in a great defensive battle 19-10

2) Texas v Colorado: Texas in a rout, they are historically good against UC

3) Alabama v #20 Ole Miss: Ole Miss sucks; sorry, but they do.

4) LSU = look at #1

5) Virginia Tech v Boston College: VaTech wins in a close one, 38-34

6) Boise St = bye week

7) USC = bye week

Cincinnati = bye week

9) Ohio State v Wisconsin: OSU by 10

10) TCU v Air Force: Air Force makes this a close one with the home field advantage. TCU by 3

11) Miami v Florida A&M: the U Jacory Harris rules

12) Iowa v Michigan: It’s UM. Iowa is overrated. They just have Penn State’s number.

13) Oregon v UCLA: Oregon in a rout

14) Penn State v Eastern Illinois: Nittany Lions by 25

15) Oklahoma St v Texas A&M: OKST despite losing Dez Bryant. They should be able to win in a close one.

16) Kansas v Iowa St: Kansas…BIG

17) Auburn v Arkansas: Arkansas surprises the overrated Auburn

18) BYU v UNLV: BYU dominates, 30 point win

19) Oklahoma v Baylor: OU is simply the superior team, will win easily

20) Florida St v #22 Georgia Tech: FSU in an upset in a close game

21) Nebraska v #24 Missouri: Nebraska won already 27-12

22) Georgia Tech = look at #20

23) South Florida = bye week

24) Missouri = look at #21

25) South Carolina v Kentucky: the other USC wins big

Michigan State v Illinois – (All Seth) This matchup is a lot better on paper than it will probably play out. With Illinois switching their starting QB mid=week from Juice Williams to Eddie McGee, I would say that he probably will not be ready to handle the imminent pass rush of the Spartans. They will be coming out with a lot of passion riding a great upset victory over UMich. I see this one being a relatively low-scoring typical Big Ten grudge match. MSU wins 24-17.

This man cannot get out of the spotlight even though he’s not even really playing football. Michael Vick is back at it again and is going to be starring on an 8-part mini series on BET. The series will be about Vick’s entire life, as to deter children from going down the same path as he did. Can you seriously tell me the average child would have thought or even heard about dog fighting if it weren’t for Michael Vick??? NOOOO!!!!!

What he already did is done and leave it that way. Let him move on, he’s already paid his debt to society by spending 18 months in prison. He’s got his career going again and his past should not hinder the future and it really is. All I know is that if my team, the Eagles, are paying him, I want him to perform on the field. I don’t care too much about his off-field community service. SCORE ME A TOUCHDOWN!!!!

I will leave y’all on a bit of a different note. Do you think Obama’s Nobel Prize will: a) hurt him b) help him with his agenda c) make no difference???

9 Things I Hate About Everyone

1. People who point at their wrist asking for the time… I know where my watch is pal, where the hell is yours? Do I point at my crotch when I ask where the toilet is?

2. People who are willing to get off their a** to search the entire room for the TV remote because they refuse to walk to the TV and change the channel manually.

3. When people say “Oh you just want to have your cake and eat it too”. Damn Right! What good is cake if you can’t eat it?

4. When people say “it’s always the last place you look”. Of course it is. Why the hell would you keep looking after you’ve found it? Do people do this? Who and where are they?

5. When people say while watching a film, “did ya see that?” No Loser, I paid $12 to come to the cinema and stare at the damn floor!

6. People who ask “Can I ask you a question?”… Didn’t give me a choice there, did ya sunshine?

7. When something is ‘new and improved’. Which is it? If it’s new, then there has never been anything before it. If it’s an improvement, then there must have been something before it, couldn’t be new.

8. When people say “life is short”. What the hell??? Life is the longest damn thing anyone ever does!!! What can you do thats longer?

9. When you are waiting for the bus and someone asks “Has the bus come yet?” If the bus came, would I be standing here???

10th Grade

As I sat there in English class, I stared at the girl next to me. She was my so called “best friend”. I stared at her long, silky hair, and wished she was mine. But she didn’t notice me like that, and I knew it. After class, she walked up to me and asked me for the notes she had missed the day before and handed them to her. She said “thanks” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I wanted to tell her, I want her to know that I don’t want to be just friends, I love her but I’m just too shy, and I don’t know why.

11th grade
The phone rang. On the other end, it was her. She was in tears, mumbling on and on about how her love had broke her heart. She asked me to come over because she didn’t want to be alone, so I did. As I sat next to her on the sofa, I stared at her soft eyes, wishing she was mine. After 2 hours, one Drew Barrymore movie, and three bags of chips, she decided to go to sleep. She looked at me, said “thanks” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I want to tell her, I want her to know that I don’t want to be just friends, I love her but I’m just too shy, and I don’t know why.

Senior year
The day before prom she walked to my locker. My date is sick” she said; he’s not going to go well, I didn’t have a date, and in 7th grade, we made a promise that if neither of us had dates, we would go together just as “best friends”. So we did. Prom night, after everything was over, I was standing at her front door step. I stared at her as she smiled at me and stared at me with her crystal eyes. I want her to be mine, but she isn’t think of me like that, and I know it. Then she said “I had the best time, thanks!” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I want to tell her, I want her to know that I don’t want to be just friends, I love her but I’m just too shy, and I don’t know why.

Graduation Day
A day passed, then a week, then a month. Before I could blink, it was graduation day. I watched as her perfect body floated like an angel up on stage to get her diploma. I wanted her to be mine, but she didn’t notice me like that, and I knew it. Before everyone went home, she came to me in her smock and hat, and cried as I hugged her. Then she lifted her head from my shoulder and said, “you’re my best friend, thanks” and gave me a kiss on the cheek. A Few Years Later

Funeral
Years passed, I looked down at the coffin of a girl who used to be my “best friend”. At the service, they read a diary entry she had wrote in her high school years. This is what it read: I stare at him wishing he was mine, but he doesn’t notice me like that, and I know it. I want to tell him, I want him to know that I don’t want to be just friends, I love him but I’m just too shy, and I don’t know why. I wish he would tell me he loved me! `I wish I did too…` I thought to my self, and I cried.

NLDS + ALDS + a wee bit more

I was meaning to do this last night, but I got a little hooked on season 1 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” So I’m going to give a quick little run down of the first round playoff matchups and a couple predictions.

NLDS

Rockies v Phillies

With the Phillies coming off an expected season, they are not at all phased by being in the playoffs for the third straight year. Now that they have 2 legitimate starters, Lee and Hamels, they are poised to make another playoff run, but they do have to beat the insanely hot Colorado Rockies. As most people say that the Phillies need to worry about the back end of their bullpen, I see Manuel trying Lidge in the first opportunity and judging from there he will decide whether to go by hitter-pitcher matchup or go with Madson. I would lean towards the first option.

I see the Phillies winning this one in 4 in Colorado and then getting ready for an NLCS matchups against…..

Cardinals v Dodgers

I would say that this matchup is the better of the two and that is why they are in primetime. Sorry Hamels, but those tv ratings end up being part of your paycheck, so I do not totally agree with you on that one. As the Dodgers have limped in to the playoffs with a struggling rotation and lukewarm hitting, I see the Cardinals coming out and dominating this series. I’m sorry, Torre, but your magic is not going to work in this one. When you’re faced with a rotation headed by Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter and then a lineup possessing Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday… good luck.

Cardinals in 4, but in more convincing fashion. I have to give the Dodgers some credit for winning the NL (i.e.-their 1 win)

So in the NLCS, I see it as Cardinals v Phillies. Let’s see…

Now on to the ALCS….

Twins v Yankees

This is a series that intrigues me. I do not like the Yankees one bit, but they were my preseason World Series champion pick. I will be rooting for the Twins to pull off the massive upset, but game 1′s starting pitchers basically summarizes the series matchup. Brian Duensing v CC Sabathia. I do think people underrate the scrappiness of the Twins and therefore I see them giving the Yankees a little scare for their $200+ million payroll.

Yankees in 5.

Angels v Red Sox

Of all the four playoffs matchups, this one has been the least hyped because there are minimal storylines to play with. The Angels have had another great season and have played relatively consistent throughout. The Red Sox on the other hand started off extremely sluggish and heated up as the season went on and finished pretty strong with many players coming back from ailment. This series will come down to hitting and I like the 1-9 depth of the Angels over the Red Sox. I’m sorry Red Sox Nation, but Varitek will hurt you this series unless Francona gives him the hook (which he won’t).

Angels in 4.

So we have the Angels v the Yankees in the ALCS.

Any thoughts on these predictions???

Now, I have to run to class and watch the Phillies game throughout.
